Kalahari — Botswana

LionA large arid to semi-arid sandy area covering much of Botswana and parts of Namibia and South Africa, the Kalahari Desert has huge tracts of excellent grazing after good rains. It is part desert and part plateau. Salt pans also make up a part of its vast terrain.

The only permanent river, the Okavango, flows into a delta, forming marshes that are rich in wildlife. Ancient dry riverbeds — called omuramba — traverse the Central Northern reaches of the Kalahari and provide standing pools of water during the rainy season. A variety of animals from elephant to giraffe and predators such as lion, cheetah and leopard can be found around these water holes.

You will go on game drives in open 4x4 vehicles in the game-rich Pipers Pans, Nxai Pan National Park and other areas of the Kalahari where you have an excellent chance of seeing spectacular predator-and-prey interaction at the water holes.
